Ksar Ouled Soltane | The 500-years-old slave quarters in Tataouine

Ksar Ouled Soltane | The 500-years-old slave quarters in Tataouine » The sense that one has seen from Tunisia’s fortification barns is that they are Photoshop creations.

Their colors, the perfect proportions of buildings and their unique architecture do not point to a storage space for grain and olives.

However, Ksar Ouled Soltane, as it is called, is a multi-storey warehouse, built by the Berbers in the 15th century, and is made up of several buildings.

In addition to the practical purposes it served, it was also a kind of defense for enemy attacks. For this reason, like other similar granaries, it is built on the top of a hill.

Among the buildings there is a paved courtyard, which on holidays was used as a meeting place for the inhabitants.

Ksar Ouled Soltane consists of four floors, accessible by steep outside stairs. The rooms on each floor were used by a family to store grain and olives.

Thus, for more than five hundred years, the nomadic tribes had these places for storage but also for protection from those who wanted to grab their crop.

Ksar Ouled Soltane was part of the set of Star Wars movies, a special reason that made him one of the most popular destinations in southern Tunisia.
