The Carved Tomb | In Ancient Lycia, Crafted structures that look like exterior churches or palaces, but in fact they are graves dug into the cliffs of the Turkish mountain. These was created  because Lycia believed that their dead bodies were carried by God’s angels and thus they placed their honored dead in geographically high places such as the cliffside.

The Lycans believed that their souls were being transported to the afterlife by enchanting winged creatures, and so they laid the graves in geographically high places, such as the cliffs.

The Carved Tomb | Ancient Lycia

The entire mountain in the area of ancient Lycia , today’s Fethiye of Turkey, is full of tombs, as seen from countless entrances dating from the 4th century.

Many of the numerous entrances are decorated with tall Roman columns and intricate reliefs. Despite the great grandeur, the interior of the tombs has simple chambers, which are empty of hundreds of years of plunder.
