Pink Salt Lake Urmia in Iran

Urmia – Endorheic salt lake located in the Armenian highlands in the north-western Iran, the largest lake in the Middle East. It used to be the largest lake in the Middle East and the 6th largest salt lake in the world, with an area of 5,200 square kilometers, length 140 km, a width of 55 km and a maximum depth of 16 meters.   As was the case with the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan, Urmia has shrunk dramatically in recent decades.   But as the lake shrinks and the water flow is restricted, the more the salt concentration increases, resulting in microscopic organisms that grow in the lake change its color, giving it a reddish hue. Photographer Norouz Ibrahim went to the northeast of Iran, to capture the beauty of “dying” Urmia.

The color change in the Urmia Lake is common in spring and early summer because of reduced precipitation and the changes brought about by climate change.   Spring is the wetter season in southwestern Iran, with rainfall to reach their peak in mid April.   Rainwater combined with melting snow from the mountains feed the lake with fresh water. Until July, the inflow of water has now stopped and the water level begins to fall. The fresh water reduces salt levels, but the content is increased again as the summer heat and drought are taking the baton. And it is precisely that period microorganisms begin to show their colors.   A careful sampling of water would assist in the identification of these pathogens, however, are suspected of scientists directed to two groups of single-celled organisms. The first is the algae of the genus Dunaliella, which are green under normal conditions, but change color in high salinity conditions and intense illumination.

Images from the satellite of NASA Agua which respectively were taken in April and July just record this change in color of the lake.   On 23 April, the lake water was green, but until July 18, had acquired the deep red color of the wine. Indeed, the second image can see the shoreline of the lake is covered with salt stocks.
